Canning to become part of the circular economy

      release date:2015-10-16

A report from Kantar World Panel reveals that 99% of consumers buy canned food when they go to the store, and Kantar's research into consumer buying habits is often used by brands, retailers, market analysts and government agencies.

Nick Mullen, president of the British Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association, recently published a blog post on the association's official website blog explaining why consumers buy canned food.

"Because canned food has been tried, tested, trusted and consistently well received by consumers and retailers, this has kept canned food a very popular staple in the kitchen. Nowadays we are beginning to have a broader understanding that canned foods are preservative-free and realize that the nutrition of canned fruits and vegetables will be fully retained."

"Very innovative products and packaging are often introduced to environmentally conscious consumers, and these innovative ways to improve the quality of the product can lead to delicious meals based on canned recipes."

"We live in a world that needs to pay more attention to the resources that future generations will need to survive, with demand for commodities expected to grow by more than 30% over the next decade. This puts us in a dilemma - how do we maintain our standard of living and achieve economic growth while being able to manage our resources more efficiently?"

Turning waste into treasure and building a circular economy is at the heart of sustainable development, and it's clear that cans, with their long shelf life and use of materials that can be recycled in perpetuity, make them well placed to play a role in both the reuse of waste and the circular economy. It's no wonder that the canned recycling process, which has been in operation for so long, is still setting the standard for the future - because we know that canned goods will never let us down.
